StAndEN have a few suggestions that can help you personally, help others and help save our planet all at the same time.

Our energy efficiency team believe that the only way to reduce our carbon footprint is to make you aware of how you can contribute towards reducing your own carbon footprint and through benefiting oneself can simultaneously benefit others.  There are so many things you can do and here are a number of items you can consider and put into action now.

Unplug Unused Electronics & Lower Your Electric Bill   Up to 10% of electricity used in homes is generated while your electronics are in standby mode.  The solution is simple; unplug unused electronics. Don't leave your cell phone or computer chargers plugged in when you're not using them.  Only plug in appliances like your toaster and your blender when you use them.

Reduce, Reuse & Save - Go on a Shopping Diet  Reduce debt,or save money for the future. A shopping diet will save you money, why, well the less you spend the less you spend. When you consume less you put less strain on the environment. Help the environment by eating locally.  Your food won't have to travel so far, hence reducing the amount of gasoline required to transport it.  Reduce your waistline while reducing your carbon footprint and walk or cycle to your local farmer's market.

Make Your Home More Energy Efficient  The things you can do that are not expensive to do.  Lower your thermostat by just a degree or two.  It will save you money and reduce your carbon footprint significantly.  Close your well lined winter curtains to keep the heat in.  Turn off lights when not needed.  Be aware that most electricity is produced by fossil fuels and adds carbon emissions to our atmosphere.  Lowering your energy usage prevents uneeded emissions.

Make Your Car More Efficient  There are various things you need to know.  The larger the load the more fuel you burn.  Driving aggressively burns more fuel.  Running daily errands uses up more fuel.  Soft tyres uses up more fuel.  So cut down on unecessary trips by planning ahead.  Review the way you driveCheck your tyres regularlyCar Share where possible with coworkers or consider other modes of transport that produce less carbon emissions than automobiles, like taking the bus or cycling.

Take Note Of Your Own Home Energy Usage  Identify where and how to save power in your home.  Keep an energy diary.  Start using low energy light bulbs.  Is your loft insulation at least 11 inches deep?  Do you have uninsulated cavity walls?  Talk to your local energy champion for guidance on how to do this.

Whatever you decide to do, understand that your actions will reduce our carbon footprint and bring us closer towards helping our environment and  A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL.

INFRANOMIC CENTRAL HEATING

SYSTEM INSTALLED

For one householder and client of St Andrews Environmental Network, Monday 8th of October began the two day installation of a new Infranomic heating system, supplied and installed by Direct Savings, Livingstone, in partnership with StAndEN.

This project will see all those involved, Direct Savings, University of St Andrews, and StAndEN working together to carefully monitor the amount of electricity required to run this type of heating.

It is hoped that the outcome for the householder will be that her electricity consumption and her resulting bills are reduced. The household will experience increased comfort levels so even if costs remain the same Infranomic eating will be proved to out perform Electric Storage Heating.

The selected household’s current storage heating is expensive and difficult to control, and the new system provides a fully controlled electric central heating to the property. You can understand the delight of our client to try out a new concept which also has good health benefits.

Unlike conventional radiators that you see next to windows and walls, the new slim-line heaters can even be fitted to the ceiling and are all thermostatically controlled by a wall thermostat.

The team will be monitoring the clients use, taking regular meter readings and take note of likes/dislikes from the client.

The project is hoped to have good results that will benefit property dwellers in the future as it is well known the cost of keeping your home warm during these cold spells is escalating all the time.
