Climate Week 21st – 25th March

The StAndEN team took part in climate week with great gusto by holding drop in surgeries at the Cosmos Centre and three days at KK Electrics not to mention talking to people on the streets of St Andrews. Over this one week period StAndEN generated many leads to follow up on and spoke with hundreds of people advising on the use of powerdowns for television and computers. During this time 960 TV powerdowns were handed out and 460 PC powerdowns. Instruction where applicable was explained to individuals, which was very much appreciated.

SHELTERED HOUSING GROUP

On Wednesday 9th March StAndEN Champions Lynn and Anne spoke to a delightful group of residents at the Scooniehill Centre. Following the powerpoint presentation residents asked many, many questions about their home heating queries and intimated their delight in the information that we were able to give them. A total of 6 follow up visits from the presentation were asked for. During the talk the residents were told that the first person to answer the next question would win a prize. A delighted Helen answered a question about thermal imaging correctly and won a jug kettle. However all were winners today, going away with a little more helpful tips and gadgets to reduce their energy costs.

St Andrews Arthritis Group 23rd February

The St Andrews Energy Network had the pleasure of giving an energy efficiency presentation to the local Arthritis Group in the town hall on Wednesday 23rd February.  What a great success it was with the St Andrews Energy Network getting several leads to follow up with home visits and information.
Throughout the evening we talked about radiator panels and their benefits, changing to low energy light bulbs and the different types of insulations to name just a few things. Also of course we mentioned the energy efficiency tips and just how to save money too!!
We finished the evening off with a chance to see the energy efficiency gadgets etc on display and everyone got a free TV and PC powerdown if they wanted one.
We had a lovely cup of coffee and biscuits and were very well recieved indeed so thanks so much to the Arthritis group particularly Marjory Fenton and Ken Crichton.  We look forward to returning next year.

Community Council Coffee Morning / January 2011

This event was held once again in St Andrews Town Hall. The event was reasonably well attended and as before the StAndEN team were on hand to give energy efficiency advice to anyone with questions and to make follow up appointments to meet with residents in St Andrews in their own homes. A good number of leads were made and the Champions have taken measures since then to help solve any queries that these individuals may have had be it from inadequate insulation to discussing how they can reduce energy costs.

HOME VISITS

In addition to the above events, the champions have been out in the streets following up enquires from the Home Insulation Scheme and
creating their own leads, in order to encourage and help St Andrews residents to SAVE ENERGY – SAVE MONEY – STAY WARM.

Links have been initiated with Madras college, with the Quakers and with individuals-  both students and local residents.
Leaflets have been placed in prominent places, such as the Costa Coffee shop in Market Street and in the local Council offices.

INFRANOMIC CENTRAL HEATING

SYSTEM INSTALLED

For one householder and client of St Andrews Environmental Network, Monday 8th of October began the two day installation of a new Infranomic heating system, supplied and installed by Direct Savings, Livingstone, in partnership with StAndEN.

This project will see all those involved, Direct Savings, University of St Andrews, and StAndEN working together to carefully monitor the amount of electricity required to run this type of heating.

It is hoped that the outcome for the householder will be that her electricity consumption and her resulting bills are reduced. The household will experience increased comfort levels so even if costs remain the same Infranomic eating will be proved to out perform Electric Storage Heating.

The selected household’s current storage heating is expensive and difficult to control, and the new system provides a fully controlled electric central heating to the property. You can understand the delight of our client to try out a new concept which also has good health benefits.

Unlike conventional radiators that you see next to windows and walls, the new slim-line heaters can even be fitted to the ceiling and are all thermostatically controlled by a wall thermostat.

The team will be monitoring the clients use, taking regular meter readings and take note of likes/dislikes from the client.

The project is hoped to have good results that will benefit property dwellers in the future as it is well known the cost of keeping your home warm during these cold spells is escalating all the time.
